WORK at the Sea School

Can you see yourself in these pictures? Come join our crew of remarkable staff.

The Sea School is growing and we are always looking for the right people to join us. We are looking for a rare combination of skill and temperament; the ability to handle complex and highly responsible job situations with good humour and a genuine appreciation for colleagues and participants. Sea School program staff are highly autonomous. We try to hire the right people, then let them do their job.

Instructor Positions

Our expedition instructors are paid well, generally higher than competitive pay for experiential outdoor educators. There is full liability insurance coverage, but no other benefits. Employment is seasonal and while there are some full-time positions we also like to have a pool of people to call on who can do one or two trips a season. We prefer to hire Canadians as much as possible, but employ staff from other countries on a season-by-season basis.

Our policy is to hire only applicants that we have sailed with, so that we can evaluate their abilities first hand and they have the opportunity to check us out.

We invite all interested potential staff to join us in Nova Scotia this summer in whatever way you can. Ideally people could join us for the Staff Training or Advanced Wilderness First Aid for Sailors weekends in June, or sail as a participant on the Professional Enrichment course in July or the 5-day Adult Trip in August. (Tuition for these courses can be reduced for strong applicants. Information on them can be found under Programs for Adults (goes to page 2) and Professional Enrichment (goes to page 4).) If these dates are not possible, please contact us and we will see what other opportunities we can make available.

Head Instructors

Head Instructors act as Captains of the boats. Merchant Marine licenses are not required, but applicants must have strong traditional seamanship skills and be able to handle an open boat with no engine in all weather with a crew of novice teenagers, navigate in the fog without instruments, and enjoy the “container of no escape” for one to three weeks at a time. They should love teaching, and know when to offer guidance and when to offer space. Applicants must already possess Advanced Wilderness First Aid training, a Marine Radio Operator’s Permit and a Pleasure Craft Operator’s card.

Assistant Instructors

Assistant Instructors work closely with Head Instructors. A collaborative approach is the norm. Assistants are expected to have the same kinds of skills as Head Instructors, though at a less experienced level. Applicants must already possess Standard First Aid and CPR training, a Marine Radio Operator’s permit and a Pleasure Craft Operator’s card.

Shore Support and Provisions Staff Positions are also available

Support staff are paid competitive wages and are covered by full liability insurance. Employment is seasonal.
