Join a crew of adventurers for another great summer on the ocean! Our overnight expeditions are open to ages 14-18; no sailing experience is necessary - we'll teach you what you need to know. If you do have a background in sailing, we'll build on those basics with a great experience of small boat coastal cruising where you'll learn chart and compass navigation, anchoring, how to read the weather, how to cook on board and more!
On these expeditions there are up to 13 people on board in total. This includes 2 fully qualified and trained Sea School instructors and 1 instructor in training, who we call the Leading Crew (usually between the ages of 16-18, has completed at least 3 trips with us already and has basic marine safety qualifications). So, on a 30ft boat, it's cozy!
The boats are traditional wooden sailboats; they are sturdy and very seaworthy. They are ketch rigged, so they have 3 sails (jib, main, mizzen). There is no motor, so when there's no wind we have 8 large oars to row! Where each crew goes depends on the weather and the length of trip, as well as the preferences of the crew. We leave from our boathouse in historic Lunenburg on the south shore and return to Lunenburg, so the general sailing area is in Mahone Bay and St. Margaret's Bay. On longer trips or with an ambitious crew or favorable winds we may explore farther up the coast. We sail during the day and anchor at night. Each night we have a rotating 1 hour shift anchor watch schedule, so that there is always someone awake and aware. Anchor watch is a great opportunity to have some time to yourself, under the stars, after a long and busy day. At night we rig up a tarp and sleep on deck - a little like camping on board - if it's a clear night we sleep under the stars. You get a totally different view of Nova Scotia living on the water - we explore really cool islands and coves that you can only get to by boat.
The youth crew works together to do everything that needs to be done on board - you learn how to sail, how to row the boat, how to navigate by chart and compass, how to prepare all meals, how to make decisions about where to go and how to get there, and how to be responsible for the safety of the boat and her crew. Each trip is different, each crew is different - it's your adventure - you decide how you want to live it.
Participants are responsible for providing warm clothing (we can rent you items as well); we provide life jackets, sleeping bags, all meals, canvas duffel bags to pack clothes and belongings into, and heavy duty foul weather gear (boots, pants, jacket).
