PROGRAM RECRUITMENT AND LOGISTICS COORDINATOR - JOB DESCRIPTION

• 7.5 month contract with possibility of extension
• Starts Tuesday February 14, ends Friday September 28, 2012
• 37.5 hours per week, $18 per hour
• Halifax based position – with some commuting to Lunenburg and area (mileage is covered for all travel out of HRM)
• Own or have unlimited access to a car for travel to and from programs in Lunenburg / Eastern Shore
• Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse register – cleared.
• Flexible work schedule – work on weekends / evenings in busy season.

Job Overview:
The Nova Scotia Sea School is seeking a passionate and independent individual to support the promotion and delivery of our Experiential Education Programs offered throughout Nova Scotia. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Recruitment and Logistics Coordinator is responsible for recruiting teenage youth and groups to a variety of single and multi day courses/ expeditions and managing the daily logistics of each course. Tasks / Duties:

Program Recruitment
• Coordinate recruitment and outreach efforts for attracting teenage youth to summer sailing expeditions and day sails through a variety of communications methods including: print, PSA’s, social media, events, presentations and workshops;
• Engage a variety of audiences in face to face or verbal conversations regarding Sea School programs;
• Recruit marginalized youth to the Sea School’s bursary funded program by working with partner referrals, social workers and other organizations;
• Work directly with youth and families/ guardians to support transition from home to trip;
• Manage Sea School bursary fund allocation and provide information to youth regarding third party funding options when necessary;
• Develop strategies for and book private group day sails in Lunenburg;
• Process registration forms and complete database entry for enrollment purposes;
• Handle all inquiries within scope of position capacity;

Program Logistics
• Support Executive Director and Field staff with scheduling, planning, recruitment and operation of single to multi-day expeditions during March Break and from early June to late August;
• Act as a resource to the program and field staff, volunteers, families, participants and community partners during program delivery;
• Prepare information required for trip, medicals, emergency contacts, etc;
• Coordinate bookings, logistics and transitions for a six-week group expedition with 10 female participants and directly supervise youth during transition periods;
• Maintain procedures manual, database, other to ensure consistent performance of routines;
• Participate in Emergency Action Protocol training and support on-call logistics for a negotiated portion of the summer.
• Inform senior staff of risk and act on areas of risk within position scope;
• Collect evaluation information and distribute program reports to Executive Director when requested;
• Perform other duties as required.

Assets / Qualifications:
• Experience working directly with youth or at-risk youth.
• Experience in public relations / event –planning / facilitation
• Training/ background in social work , non-violent crisis intervention, mental health first aid, similar (considered an asset, not mandatory)
• Post-Secondary Education / Bachelor of Education (considered an asset, not mandatory)
• Sailing / multi-day adventure coordination or instruction / camp background preferred.
• First Aid / Wilderness First Aid or similar (considered an asset, not mandatory)

The Sea School offers primarily teenagers, ages 14 to 18, adventure experiences that transform how they see themselves, the world around them and their capacity to contribute to our society. From the simple experience of life on a small boat or building something with their hands youth gain the confidence and awareness to make important decisions about their lives. The Sea School delivers multi-day expeditions on sailboats, on remote islands learning farming and wilderness skills and in heritage places doing community service projects. Each year the school impacts over 200 teenagers on programs, and works with 40 community partners. Over 50% of our participants are supported through our bursary program and leadership development fund. We never turn an interested participant away. The 2012 summer season will staff 25 instructors and office personnel and 15 young leaders to deliver safe, high quality and life changing experiences in the outdoors.
