For educators, youth workers, biologists, managers, entrepreneurs and community-development practitioners. Navigate uninhabited islands, explore historic sea-routes and learn to sail a traditional wooden-boat as you share ideas and experiences with other inspiring professionals and learn the Sea School's approach to education. Enhance your skills and reflect on your goals for the coming year.
Our professional development 6 day program is an opportunity to experience first-hand the highly impactful process we offer teenagers at Sea School where hands-on learning and team building are at the forefront. Our instructors speak aloud about their facilitation approaches on the boat, how they engage people in leadership as commanders, navigators, safety officers and how they create space for important debriefing and reflection to take place. The group also explores how the sea and the outdoors as well as natural consequence influence behavior and personal development.
Practitioners take away new skills and strategies including:
Leadership strategies – how to let others lead and the qualities of a good commander
Risk Management – how to plan and implement activities that allow for positive risk taking in a controlled and safe environment
Resiliency training and coping strategies - how to design programs, meetings or facilitation with built in challenges that develop social and resiliency skills. How to use silence, reflection, solos and debriefs as tools to help people develop resiliency and coping strategies.
Sailing and wilderness camping skills - How to sail the boat, traditional navigation, trip planning, gear selection, menu planning and more!
Trips begin in Lunenburg at 10am on Day 1 and finish in Lunenburg at 6pm on Day 6. Cost of trip includes tax, all food and use of Sea School foul weather gear (including boots), PFD, sleeping bag and mat, and canvas duffel bag.
"Sailing with the Nova Scotia Sea School was one of the most challenging, exciting and healing experiences of my life. The challenge for me was stepping aboard a 30 foot boat for five full days and nights with complete strangers. My excitement stemmed from the notion of being on the sea, a setting I've always found solace in. The healing aspect came from discovering strengths I didn't even know I had, or had forgotten about in the clouded flurry of being a student, searching for employment and navigating personal relationships. The strangers aboard soon became close friends as we worked to literally keep each other afloat and my love for the sea and the salty air that envelops you, only grew even more. The Sea School is founded on the notion of the sea's ability to teach us something about our own inherent wisdom and ability to persevere and that is exactly what I took away from this experience. The sea provides an incredible metaphor for our experiences on land, regardless of your personal background. We're all riding the waves but with keen awareness, a little bit of skill and most importantly an open heart there's always a path back to shore!" - Bay to Bay Classic Sail Participant
