SEA OF ISLANDS - 5-DAY
The Sea School will show you a whole new world of fun and outdoor skills through sailing and wilderness survival. Learn to handle wind, waves and weather with confidence as you choose your own adventure with your team of crew mates. No sailing experience is necessary - just an open mind and willingness to try, we'll teach you what you need to know! You will learn chart and compass navigation, anchoring, how to read the weather, how to cook on board and more!
You will sail during the day on board Dorothea, a 30' traditional wooden sailboat; she is sturdy and very seaworthy. She is ketch rigged - 3 sails (jib, main, mizzen). There is no motor, so when there's no wind we have 8 large oars to row! We leave from our boathouse in historic Lunenburg on the south shore and return to Lunenburg, so the general sailing area is in Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, and Chester.
We sail during the day and anchor at night to sleep on Andrews Island in Mahone Bay. Each trip is different, each crew is different - it's your adventure - you decide how you want to live it.
The youth crew works together to do everything that needs to be done on board - you learn how to sail, how to row the boat, how to navigate by chart and compass, shelter building, fire building, tracking, how to prepare all meals, how to make decisions about where to go and how to get there, and how to be responsible for the safety of the boat and her crew.
Participants are responsible for providing warm clothing (we can lend you items as well); we provide life jackets, sleeping bags, all meals, canvas duffel bags to pack clothes and belongings into, and heavy duty foul weather gear (boots, pants, jacket).
